Horqin Desert Afforestation Activity 2009 Report
In 2005, Hitachi Construction Machinery (Shanghai) started the "Hitachi Construction Machinery (Shanghai) Forest Project" in the Horqin Desert in Inner Mongolia, China, by assigning the work to an environmental NGO afforestation network. We have mentioned this project frequently in previous CSR activity news and would like to introduce the activities of the past year.
In 2008 we distributed the rights to use the land to the residents of the Hasuratai community and now, in principle, have entrusted the maintenance of the green land to the same residents. Also, we managed to plant 5,000 poplar trees in the remaining sandy areas and nearly covered the sand dunes. We also planted 300 pine trees.
The awareness level of the residents has also undergone a large change. They have come to realize that grazing, when unsupervised, can damage the land and that this can result in having a bad effect on livestock. Therefore they have started to trim the grass and farm beans in the poplar tree areas for feed. Also, in September last year, Hitachi Group afforestation volunteers visited and aided us in our activities.
In 2010, although the afforestation network is responsible for the watering and weeding of the pine trees, we decided to entrust the care of the poplar trees to the landowners. In regards to the issue of the maintenance of the pasture fence, we plan to work harder to encourage the residents to take on the burden of the expenses.
This year we are at the half way point of our 10 year plan. We will continue to support afforestation activities and the residents in their goal to become self-reliant as soon as possible.
