Development of Ultrasonic Probe for Detecting Near Surface Discontinuity

(Application to evaluate Sprayed Coatings) 2001.06 The Japanese Society for Non-Destructive Inspection by Hiroshi Yamamoto, Yoshihiko Takishita (Touhoku Uni) Sumito Saka

Image Taken of Ultrasonic Probe

A new type of ultrasonic probe has been developed for detecting near surface flaws in this work. new probe has a hollow in the center of it, which can separate easily a leaky surface wave (LSAW) from longitudinal waves along the central axis. To verify the usefulness of the new probe, test samples having delamination and cracks are made, and sprayed coating is evaluated without machining its surface. The results show that with this probe parts containing delamination and cracks are clearly detected and the acoustic image near the edge parts can also be clearly obtained.
