The strength of a T-joint is the greatest when there is full penetration and two sided fillet welds. For structures with a closed section, it is often the case that the joint can be welded only on one side. This paper describes the development of a back-bead welding process (Bulldozed-Out Bead (BOB) welding process), which was found to achieve full penetration and two-sided fillet welding without backing and without root-gap by one-sided welding. Its fundamental characteristics were also investigated.
