Conducting personal information protection audits

Our group holds personal information, including customer information, business partner information, shareholder information and employee information. We have published our personal information protection policy on our website and ensure thorough personal information protection under the Personal Information Protection Management Rules.

In fiscal 2008, we conducted personal information protection audits at five group companies in Japan including Tokyo TCM, and at five group companies outside Japan including Hitachi Construction Machinery (Malaysia), in addition to the East Japan Division, the West Japan Division (the two divisions were merged to become the Japan Division). We confirmed through the audits that all of the staff questioned during the audits understood the importance of personal information protection, and that they were diligent in their custody of such information. We will continue to ensure the personal information protection by conducting these audits. Although there was theft and loss of PCs, etc. in fiscal 2008, there were no reports of damage linked to personal information because the PCs had security tools like encryption software for hard disk called "Hibun" installed to protect the confidential information.
