Ms. Nakayama finished in the 4th place at the Beijing Olympic Games
We have a clay shooting club as part of our efforts to promote sports in Japan. Clay shooting is a sport competition in which players compete in shooting accuracy by shooting airborne clays (unglazed plates) with a shotgun. In rifle shooting, competitors shoot stationary targets. On the other hand, competitors shoot moving targets in clay shooting. Ms. Yukie Nakayama, a member of our clay shooting club, qualified to participate in the Beijing Olympic Games that started on August 8, after getting good result of competitions in Japan and abroad.

On August 11, twenty people including Ms. Nakayama competed in women's trap shooting at the Beijing Olympic Games. In trap shooting, competitors shoot 25 clays in each round from each of five stations set in a line.

Competitors were separated into four groups (five competitors in each group) at the third round of the preliminary heat. (25 clays per round x 3 rounds = 75 clays, full points) Ms. Nakayama got 22 points in the first round and 23 points in the second round, making a total of 45 points, which is not quite sufficient to proceed to the final in usual World Cup competitions and World Championships. At the end of the second round, two competitors got 47 points; one, 46 points; and five, including Ms. Nakayama, 45 points. These eight competitors then competed to decide the finalists (6 competitors). In the third round Ms. Nakayama got 22 points. So she got a total of 67 points. She had practiced hard assuming she would need 70 points to make the final, so the score of 67 points was rather poor for her. However, a Chinese competitor in the fourth group with the same number of points as Ms. Nakayama at the end of the second round missed a lot in the second half of the third round perhaps through nerves while thinking about the final, and got only 18 points. This meant that Ms. Nakayama could slip into the final. Later, Ms. Nakayama said that she was not in such good form, but she concentrated on shooting without giving up. Although there was only a slim chance of making the final, her determination got her there.

Although Ms. Nakayama went into the final in sixth place, she made third place by playing very persistently, but because other competitors had the same score, they had to shoot off for the bronze medal. As a result of the shoot off, an American took the bronze. Owing to her tenacity, Ms. Nakayama finished fourth - the best ever finish for Japanese women in trap shooting.
We will continue to promote clay shooting. So would you appreciate continued support for Ms. Nakayama and other competitors?
