On July 17 and 18, Hitachi uValue Convention 2008, sponsored by Hitachi, Ltd., was staged at Tokyo International Forum. Participating in the convention as a member of the Hitachi Group, we presented our activities for demining.

For five days from May 28 to June 1, African Festa 2008 took place in Yokohama during the 4th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 4). We exhibited the latest model of the demining equipment at the event.

The challenge to eradicate mines - stepping into the minefields in Angola
Angola is now at peace, but mines laid during the three decades of civil war obstruct social development. Mr. Amemiya, the president of Yamanashi Hitachi Construction machinery, and Angolan youth have started the fight to eradicate mines for the sake of future in Angola.

The development of the demining equipment
It is thought that about 110 million mines are buried in 83 countries because of wars or civil wars, and more than 70 people are still killed or injured every day. Mr. Amemiya, the president of Yamanashi Hitachi Construction Machinery, has been developing demining machines for more than ten years, ever since he saw the tragic situation of mine victims in Cambodia when he was there on business. Now 52 units of demining equipment are used in five countries.

The equipment can clear shrubs (preparation work for demining) and demine in the minefields without changing attachments.
