Second compliance questionnaire for employees

Sufficient awareness by each of the employees is vital to carry out thorough compliance. Since we established the Compliance Division in 2002, we have provided training on compliance mainly concerning the Antimonopoly Act, to all of the employees, and other regular compliance trainings according to the position of the employees, including training for newly hired employees, training for junior sales staff and training for section managers. We also provided trainings at sales offices, factories and group companies around the world. Moreover we conducted compliance training to all of the employees in fiscal 2006, taking into consideration the results of the first compliance questionnaire for employees conducted in November 2005. In addition to the trainings, we perform compliance audits at offices and factories in Japan and group companies around the world.

In fiscal 2008 we conducted second compliance questionnaire for employees over about one month from October, to find out whether there had been any change in the compliance awareness of the employees after implementation of the measures mentioned above. We distributed questionnaires to all of our employees and the employees of Yamanashi Hitachi Construction Machinery, Okinawa Hitachi Construction Machinery and Hitachi Construction Machinery Leasing. Out of the total number of 5,575 applicable employees, 4,543 responded to the questionnaire (a response rate of 81.5%).

The questionnaire contained more than sixty questions including our efforts and each workplace efforts to compliance, the awareness of CSR Guidebook and compliance hotline, harassment, and environmental conservation, in addition to individual employee awareness and actions for compliance. We are currently analyzing the responses to the questionnaire. In fiscal 2009 we will determine the effectiveness of the trainings given since fiscal 2006 based on the results of the questionnaire, and will provide trainings focusing on problems revealed by the questionnaire.
