Hitachi Sponsors Smiling for Smiddy Challenge

Brendan Camilleri, National Mining Marketing Manager, Riding to Raise Funds

Over the past two years HCA has taken part in the Corporate Triathlon series as an avenue to raise money for charity, through the generous support of our customers and suppliers. During this time HCA, our customers and our suppliers have donated $162,000 dollars to the 'Bottlemart Smiling for Smiddy Charity Ride' in aid of cancer research (specifically melanoma and prostate research). The Smiling for Smiddy Charity has donated in excess of $650,000 to cancer research. Adam Smiddy, the ride's namesake, was a 26 year old triathlete and physiotherapist who passed away after being diagnosed with an aggressive melanoma.

Preparations are well underway for the fourth annual Bottlemart Smiling for Smiddy Challenge, which is set to run from the 5th to the 12th of September, 2009. HCA has signed up as a major sponsor for the ride. The journey begins in Brisbane and finishes in Home Hill in North Queensland - a total of sixteen hundred kilometres in eight days.

This year fifty riders, including our own Brendan Camilleri, National Mining Marketing Manager and Gavin Smith, Brisbane Sales Manager, are seeking to raise $500,000 dollars for world-class cancer research at the Mater Hospital. Brendan will also be raising money for 'Beyond Blue,' a national organisation that provides information about depression and anxiety disorders in our society, in rememberance of former HCA employee Craig Little, who tragically took his own life in February of this year.

We wish Brendan the best of luck in achieving our target of $100,000.
